Our Goal

A team of dedicated volunteers, working under the umbrella of Age Friendly Sisters Country (AFSC) is offering FREE transportation to medical appointments for people who can’t drive.  This innovative ride-share service is Sisters Transportation and Ride Share –  STARS.

STARS uses specially designed computer software to match riders with vetted volunteer drivers. When you call STARS (541-904-5545) a dispatcher answers the phone and records all the details of your ride; the date, the address of the doctor or clinic, and any other important information.  Medical appointments include:  dental, physicians, physical therapy, vision, hearing, lab work and testing.  STARS drivers provide rides to Bend and Redmond in addition to rides here in Sisters Country.  Some limited grocery or prescription pickup services are available.  Ask the dispatcher for details.

STARS is the first volunteer “good neighbor” transportation service for Sisters area residents, and it has provided dozens of rides since its rollout in March 2020.  Drivers are your neighbors, who donate their time and personal vehicle to help out.  Strict health protocols are currently in place to ensure safe transportation for the driver and the passenger.

How does STARS work?

  1.  Call STARS volunteer dispatcher (541- 904-5545) Tuesdays and/or Thursdays between 10am and 3pm to schedule a ride to your medical appointment.  Rider information and appointment date/time will be logged.
  2. The dispatcher will post ride details on a driver dashboard.
  3. The rider will be contacted by phone by a volunteer driver for pick up location, date/time/location of appointment.
  4. All STARS rides are roundtrip.
  5. Requests must be made no less than 48 hours ahead of the appointment date.  Driver availability will be weekdays 8am to 5pm.

Volunteer opportunities with STARS:

There are many ways to help STARS as a volunteer.  In addition to drivers, we need dispatchers, trainers, media creators, fundraisers, grant writers and tech assistance. Use your skills! Help out from home!  If you’d like to help, go to www.agefriendlysisters.com and click on the STARS tab to join our great team.
